Knitwear Alterations & Custom Knits
Your sweater, re‑fitted. Or knitted from scratch.
Knit doesn't behave like woven cloth — cut it carelessly and it runs. Our tailors shorten, take in, re-rib and repair knitwear stitch by stitch, and knit made-to-measure pieces in the yarn, stitch and fit you choose.

Why knit needs a specialist
Every loop holds the next one together.
A standard hem on a jumper leaves a stiff, bulky edge that pops the first time it stretches. We treat knitwear the way it was made.
Stabilised before cutting
Each cut edge is secured and overlocked first, so stitches can't ladder or run while we work.
Linked stitch-for-stitch
Original cuffs and welts go back on with a linking machine, joining loop to loop so the seam still stretches.
Hand-finished joins
Grafting and hand darning close the last gaps invisibly — on fine cashmere through to chunky hand-knits.

Shoulders
Dropped or too-wide shoulders narrowed so the seam sits on your shoulder point.

Questions
Before you bring it in.
Anything else, ask us in the studio or through the enquiry form.
Can you shorten a hand-knitted jumper?
Usually, yes. Hand-knits can be unpicked from the cuff or hem, shortened and re-finished. Some patterns, like colourwork near the edge, change what's possible — we'll assess it in person.
Will the altered seam still stretch?
Yes. We link knit seams loop to loop rather than straight-stitching them, so they keep the same give as the rest of the garment.
How visible will a moth-hole repair be?
On plain knits in a yarn we can match, repairs are close to invisible. On heavily textured or rare colours we'll show you the options, including a deliberate contrast darn.
How long does a custom knit take?
Most custom pieces take four to nine weeks from swatch approval, depending on yarn weight and stitch. Chunky plain knits are quickest; fine-gauge and colourwork take longest.
Can I supply my own yarn?
Yes — bring it to your consultation and we'll swatch it first to check it suits the garment and has enough yardage.
Do I need to come in for a fitting?
For alterations we pin the garment on you to get lengths right. For custom orders we measure you at the start and fit once before finishing.
